The Association of European Schools of Planning was established in 1987 as an international association with scientific, artistic and educational purposes. With over 150 members, AESOP is the only representation of planning schools of Europe. AESOP takes a leading role and lends its expertise to ongoing debates and initiatives regarding planning education and planning qualifications of future professionals. AESOP promotes its agenda with professional bodies, politicians and all other key stakeholders in spatial and urban development and management across Europe. Annual congresses attracting up to a thousand participants have been taking place since 1987 and due to the pandemic the last one took place in 2019, thus the 2022 event will be especially significant. The Congress expects to gather up to 600 participants. Its main goal is to provide attendees with a high-level and multifaceted programme of workshops, symposia, and lectures from top specialists in the field.
The AESOP Annual Congress takes place on 25-29 July 2022 in Tartu. The purpose of the project is to hold a congress on par with the quality of previous congresses, and where the participants will receive tools and educational input. The congress will introduce Estonia to approximately 600 guests, many of whom may be here for the first time. As a result, awareness of Estonia as a tourism and conference destination has increased.
